How Can it be September?

Whew, it seems like it was just April!

The milo in my compost heap is turning.... telling me that summer is over and the season of harvest is here.

The salsify says the same thing (and I hope it re-seeds itself a LOT)

You know I planted in containers this year, and I planted a mix from Burpee that I thought was wildflowers, but turned out to be zinnias, marigolds, and these lovely little sunflowers that have just opened.

The coleus is leggy but still hanging on.

Tomorrow, my helper, Grandson Jax, is coming and we are actually going to pull out the tomato plants in the tubs on the patio.  They were started from seed by me, and with one exception, the tomatoes were not to my taste.  I also have realized that the chickens do not eat them (strange!) and many went to waste, since you cannot give a tomato away around here.

So... no more.  I may plant ONE next year (it will be a Burpee Big Boy) and that's it.

I did have two planters on the porch with volunteer tomatoes, and I am hoping one re-seeds itself, as those tiny cherries were the sweetest ever!

You all know that I rarely post about my family.  I used to, but I grew to think that for the young kids, it was an invasion of their privacy.  However, I am going to brag a little.

On Sunday, I drove down to La Cygne (Kansas) where my oldest son Jim has a lot at a lake development.
He and his family have many friends there and they are all really close.  I have heard about them for years, but have not met them.
I also had not met my newest great grandson, Wyatt, because his mommy and daddy, his sister Maci, and he all live down there in a house.
My son Jim met me in La Cygne to lead me to the lot.

Here are Wyatt and granddaughter Madison, his mom.

Almost five Maci, and my daughter in law, Amy.

Son Jim.

Granddaughter Paiton, on her ATV.  Jax's was out of gas, so she was the chauffer.

Jax in front of Clifford, the Big Red Truck.  Clifford is his, and that's why Jax is working for me in the yard.  He has to pay for the registration and license, and get his permit.... so he will be working for grandma for a while.  Since Ben left for school, Jax has become my main man.

I did not get a group picture of everyone else, or Wyatt with his daddy, but by the time I left, they had started a fire in the fire pit, and everyone was gathering.

Let me just say this... I am not a lake person... but it was nice to see what it was all about, and finally get to meet my little great grand.  I am guessing I won't get to see them again until Christmas time.

Labor Day weekend, to my family, was going with my dad, a union electrician, to the Labor Day Parade in Kansas City, Kansas, on "The Avenue"... Minnesota Ave... where we celebrated union successes with many other families.

Things are different, and I am not saying worse.  I am so glad the kids have a place to gather with their friends, relax, eat some good food, and have fun.

Look who is back!

OUT OF THE BLUE.

After eight days, I heard a noise while doing chores last week, looked down, and there was Mama at my feet!
I did not even see from which direction she had come.

You can see in this picture from the porch cam that she re-attached herself to me immediately.
She is hanging on the porch or here....

You can just barely tell, but she spends hours laying under the bird feeder.  Needless to say, NO ONE is using this feeder.

I have not seen a bird on it all day today.  I will scoop up the feed I put on it this morning and put it back in the bin so the raccoons don't get it.

IF she does this for a while, Jax and I will store the feeder in the barn and bring it out when it is colder.
While she is focused on this one, the birds are eating from the more permanent one in the garden.

I am rarely seeing squirrels now, they are too frightened of the cats. I miss the squirrels, I admit it.
Both Bullseye and Mama are lethal hunters.

After literally a year and a half, the beautiful Cleo will let me stroke and pet her.

I feed her at the Little Red Hen House, whose porch is slowly deteriorating.  I had to feed her up high,
so the sheep would not get into her food.  There is a bowl out during the day, and I leave a little at night. That was a project I had for Ben to do that we never got to... rebuilding that small porch and tightening up that building.

A week ago today, I looked out my bedroom window to see this in my front yard!

A man keeps a small herd of cattle in my neighbor's pasture.  Twice before, his cows have gotten loose on the road, and I ran them into my yard.  Two years ago, he brought a trailer over, caught the cow and took her back.  Last year, despite my request that they not do so, his wife and daughter ran the cow back through the fence, and of course said "We'll come back and fix it".  They did not.
I noticed when I mowed last Tuesday that the fence was low in the corner, but by Wednesday, when this big girl came through... it was down to the ground.  Why the rest of them did not follow her, I do not not know.
My good neighbors from across the road came over and helped me run her back into her pasture... and then, Gary came back after they did an errand, and he and I (well, HE pounded) three tee poles in, and we pulled the fence up and Gary tied it to the poles.  No other cows have tried it since then, thank heavens.

That afternoon, Jax worked for me.  He called out to me to tell me there was something black in my garden area.  I said "That the water fortex for the birds" and he said no, it was something else.

It was THIS.  I came over and said "Cow pat" and he looked at me like I was nuts.
I still don't know if he was pulling my leg or not.

Can you see the hummer sitting on the light wire on the left?  They are feeding furiously now, getting ready to go.  As I type this, there is one sitting out there!

I hung two tiny little feeders a friend suggested I order last week.  They have one feeding port on them, and that is one in the picture.  The hummers seem to really like them.  I have two regular feeders hanging too, but they have to be cleaned almost every day with our humidity.

Regular scene.  I am going broke buying wet and dry.

(that's Bully, Mama, Molly and Coco)

Since I am making this about family,
here is my husband Keith as a teenager.  One of his relatives sent it to me last week.

His birthday and my stepson Brandon's, Keith's youngest boy, are on the tenth.
Keith would have been 63, and Brandon, I think... would have been 30.  (I cannot remember his birth year since I wasn't there!)

I remember all my loved ones on their birthdays.

Back where she should be.

More Christmas Cheer

Today was the second Christmas party we had scheduled...

my side of the family.

Chris and Nathan came up from Garnett, and Chris helped me get ready by running the vacuum while I decorated (more) cookies.

We did a lot of visiting... Amy, Paiton and Madison...
the cream cheese - and pepper jelly did not last long.

Paiton rearranged the Nativity Scene some more.

Leaving Baby Jesus alone with the Angel.

I made two big pots of chili... and the boys came up from the Kids Cave to get some.

Within about five minutes, one pot was gone.

(Jim and Amy)

Our little slugger Jaxton got his Boston hat he wanted... and...

His name is on the back... and yes, he was upset when I took this.

Jacob and Nathan had their pictures taken with Grandma, and yes, Nathan was cutting up... he's 15.

Jester and Lilly were in on the festivities.

We even got our pictures taken... with Jim photo-bombing us.

Chris was Grandchild number One ... born long before Keith and I were married...
and when he was little... I had him pose with Moosletoe and Little Toe in his
little rocker, every Christmas.  I asked him to do it again today.

You see, Chris was nine years old before Nathan was born... so he was the Only for a long time.  I had very good memories of Chris rocking Moosletoe.

And it has come down to his little sister Paiton, too!

We had such a good time... and I had enough chili to save for
my younger son this week... it's in the freezer.

The kids, minus big sister Madison, are all here for the night, down in the Kids Cave.

Keith is about to fall to a cold, the one I had 3 weeks ago, I'm sure... and
he has dialysis tomorrow on top of it, on the holiday schedule, instead of
Monday.

The kids all leave early in the morning, and then I'm going to rest for a while!

That's what Christmas is all about!

The Holiday Weekend

It's Sunday evening, and we have had quite the weekend.

The background noise has been loud... the fans and humidifiers left by the
restoration crew have provided a constant hum.

These are only two of the fans, and one of the dehumidifiers...
There are two fans going in the master bedroom... and
more dehumidifiers and fans in the basement.

The noise... whew.

Tomorrow, the restoration company comes to check moisture levels, and
hopefully, to start the restoration.  I know one thing, I need to do some laundry... and
I'm facing the laundromat if we don't get a chance here.

You see where we spent our July 4.... we got to the ball park early.

Jim, Amy, and the kids joined us for the game.

The field guys had done a great job with the field... see the beautiful July fourth?  There
were also flags to either side on the grass.

Jacob and Jax are the two baseballers in the family.  Jacob's season had
just ended.

Jim and Amy and the four kids were our guests, it was their wedding anniversary!

You see that the stands filled up nicely, the T Bones had over 8,000 people that day.

Madison was good enough to take this picture of Grandma, a silly Grandpa, and the two boys.

But Madison and Paiton were there, too.

(I had to tease them, they all look so sad in this picture!)

After the game, there was a wedding!  A wedding!  On the pitcher's mound!

The groom had pitched for the T Bones when they first started here, for about 6 years.
His bride is also from the area.

Keith and I stayed to watch the short ceremony.

As it finished, the field lights were killed and this started:

We watched from the parking lot.  It was a great display.

Keith and I were so glad to get home to our "little girl".  She is so lonely now without her pack... and we knew she was going to be afraid of the noise... luckily, our neighborhood was not bad, and we drew all the curtains and blinds and left the tv on, and that, with the noise of the fans, took care of things.

This mundane picture is the Leavenworth Country Transfer Station.  Keith and I have become
avid recyclers, and we are going to set up a proper station soon in our garage. We are currently doing cardboard, paper and plastic bags, and are going to add plastic bottles.  Yes, we're late to the recycle game, but I regularly did paper and magazines in Tongie.

This is a very common sight all around us now.

We were back at the stadium yesterday for a double header... The T Bones won both games.
Another good crowd, and our team leads the league in attendance.

I forgot to take my camera this morning on the way to church... I went through farmland, and
saw several interesting things, including a poor dead coyote at the side of the road.
How sad I feel for the wild things... and how I miss the coyote's howl here.

This week will bring the restoring of our water damage (we hope) and
Keith will be back in the hospital for 2 days to have more fluid
drawn off his abdomen.  Next Saturday, we
are having a work party at the old house... and we hope to have it ready to rent soon.
Lots of pictures coming soon... the gardens are looking beautiful, and
the tomato plants out there are doing very well.

We are expecting some severe storms tomorrow... so
we will see what that brings.

I hope everyone had a wonderful and safe holiday!

Christmas Eve

The last two days has been all about family.
Well... chores, cold and family.

If you want to know what it feels like to do
chores in subzero weather with the wind blowing,
please read Michaele's blog at
Sprout N Wings yesterday, and you will understand.
She said it more eloquently than I ever could.  (And that link will
take you directly to the story).

Here's the Garnett Gang, blocking the Christmas tree so you can't see it...
friend Jay, Nathan, Hayleigh, and Chris, (Hayleigh is his girlfriend).

Mom Sherie did not get in the picture, and I didn't realize it.

We had a good time, only staying an hour or so because it snowed all the way down.
It turned out we were worried for nothing, it didn't accumulate.

We had ham and cheese sliders, chips and dip, and I took lots of cookies for them to snack on.

Jay celebrated Christmas with us, and we were so glad to have him!

Here's something I read about last year and did this year.
I saved all my change... just the change I got when I was out, and it took me a
full year to fill three jars.  I gave one to Hayleigh, Chris and Nathan... we didn't forget Jay, either, don't worry.
It did not "cost" me anything, except to remember to put the money in the jar every so often, so I am
going to do it again next year.  I know one jar had over forty dollars in it.

The Intrepid Lil does not let a little snow stop her from anything.

I go out to dump the outside water about 6:15 every evening.  I also dump the water inside the old henhouse.
Last night, this is how I found the goats... I had my little flashlight with me.

What I am trying to say is that it was so dark, I had to turn the flashlight on to FIND them... and then I saw where they all sleep... the two little girls curl up in the corner.
We do have a warming light in this barn, it has hung there since Kody and Kaycee came to us in May... but we have not utilized it with these... though it got down to zero last night.
We are thinking of using it... but we are also afraid of the little three chewing on the cord outside.
The barn is very tight in the back, and you see they are all hunkered down back there in the back.
It's going to be cold out tonight again, and windy, but they are in the best place.

Then today, I ran into Jim's house, and we exchanged our gifts. Tonight they go to a big party with Amy's family... so we did ours early.
That's Jim, little Jax, Jacob, Amy, beautiful Madison, and little sister Paiton.
One of Paiton's gifts was a farm set, not that I'm trying to subvert her or anything.

Lilly Ann has the right idea.

A year ago today, we lost little Gertie Lou very suddenly, our smallest pug, and
only three years old.  I can't believe a year has flown by.
I hope Santa is good to all the little girls and boys tonight.
