More Hawk News

We don't have a picture of him tonight, but the hawk taken to Operation Wildlife was indeed a juvenile red shouldered hawk.  They get mighty big!

The staff there has named him "Rooster", as he was vanquished by one.   His only injury is the loss of dignity and some flight feathers in the tussle with Rocky, so they will keep him there until his feathers have grown back in, and then release far from our home.

So tonight, Keith came home after me, and went out to do chores.  He found Buffy the Polish hen hanging upside down in the fence for the second time this year, and was able to loosen her.  She appears to be allright, but we will see tomorrow.  While he was doing that, Lilly became very agitated, and Keith realized there was a possum in the henyard with him.

Keith 1, Possum zero.

I'm sorry, but we have lost way too many birds lately.

  1. No need to apologize. I'm very grateful for my pens. As much as I'd like to let my birds free range, it's just too dangerous. Hope Buffy is able to recover.

  2. I hope Buffy recovers too! And yes, no need to apologize! We have to do what we need to do in order to protect our livestock and our "family members". I completely understand :) Hope you have a better week, hugs, Trish

  3. I wish I could catch our hawk - poor little banty hen... Glad to hear you took out the possum. I'm pretty nonviolent, but if I found a possum in our chicken run, I think I could take him out. Hope Buffy recovers!

  4. I know it's best....

We only have the 5 hens left, so I've been closing the door. We need to set the trap again. There was a possum on the fence the other night.
