Freezing Friday

For the second day in a row, we got up to temps in the 30's.
I hope this doesn't portend what winter will bring.

The temps did rise to 68 yesterday (and I changed into shorts) but we are expected to get to only the low fifties today.

These two have the right idea... snuggled for warmth.

The henspa hens get to come out now every evening at about 5 PM.  It does not give them long to be out, but they get to dig in the dirt and run around for a while, and then slowly put themselves back into the henspa.  As the days grow ever shorter, I'll let them out earlier... but it's a delicate balance.  I feed the dogs... let them stay out for a few minutes to go to the bathroom, then dogs come in, and hens come out.

Ferdy keeps a close eye on his ladies.  For the youngest rooster here, he has turned into a very good one.
You can see the buddleia blooms a little better here, too.

Switch to this morning, and you can see the clouds have come over.
I noticed when in the goat barn this morning that the little girls have been sleeping back in the northeast corner, there is a hollow in the straw/hay deep and round, just the size of two little girls sleeping curled up with each other.

This tree is across the road, but you can see the clouds coming over it.  See the beautiful red poison ivy in it?  I love to see it turn fiery in the fall.

And our own beautiful maple tree is just now showing the barest hint of red in the leaves on the left.

There they go in the last of the sunlight this morning, always quick to get moving when I open the gate from the pen.

It's such a pleasure to drive down country roads (our own) these days... the colors are so beautiful.

I'm going to finish Deborah Niemann's book today, so I can tell you all about it, and raising goats naturally.

I've been sitting here listening to classical music this morning, and the rainy drizzle has already begun.
I think I'll get myself moving and put the little ones back in their pen, so they can get in their safe and dry barn.

Everyone have a great Friday!

  4. Mary Ann,

It's pretty up there in Kansas, I love your pictures.
Ever critter is trying to stay warm with this weather, including the human critters :-)
We put the heat on to warm up the house for our inside critters (parakeets) and dog.
    Expecting frost tonight here.

  6. Our leaves are starting to drop rapidly, so we are ahead of you this season. We have not yet had a frost, though.

  7. You described the beauty of country living perfectly. I love your road.
Every thing just looks pristine and full of simple life.
I can't believe how cold your temps are right now.
Our nights are still in the 50s.
I know it will change soon. Have a nice weekend as well.

  8. I can picture you there, Mary Ann, listening to classical music and the rain beginning, chill in the air. You'll probably have to retire the shorts for a few months soon! You have it all down to a science, your schedule of dogs in, hens out, many balls to keep in the air on a hobby farm.

I am going to make time for a country road drive soon. Life is too short not to do that. Thank you for reminding me of it.

  9. Wow, 30s! I've been waiting for that. We had some a monthish ago, and now it's been oddly warm. Poison ivy is so beautiful. It's so odd that something so bad can be so pretty. Your pictures are lovely. Thank you for sharing them!

  12. For a change you've been colder there than we are here. Most nights it's in the lower 40's, no 30's yet, but the days are now barely warming up to 60. I'm not sure what tree we have in the front of the house, but it is almost bare now. Other trees are just changing so we'll have plenty of color in the neighborhood for a while yet. Ours always changes first on the street. Thank goodness you have a good supply of hay for everyone to snuggle up to there. I'm sure they are all thankful for that.

  13. I tried to take my own picture this week.
Some people can do amazing self-photos.
    Not me.

  14. Blurry, off-center, and this was about the 10th try...
Is there a trick to this?

  15. Since we were rushing out the door to T-ball, I had Nate snap one of me in front.
Not a whole lot better, but at least it's in focus :)

  16. I spent all winter looking for colored skinnies. All winter! The problem is, that I didn't want to spend a lot. When you are buying cheap pants, you can't expect a perfect fit...I guess.

  17. By Spring, I wished that I had just bought a Nordstrom pair in the fall. I would have gotten my moneys worth by wearing them all winter.

  18. Now that it's summer, I finally broke down and bought a pair of colored capris.
They're not the perfect fit, but they were cheap :)
    They were $12.99 at H&M.

  19. My shirt doesn't match, but I think that's the way to go with colored pants.
If it did match, it would be way too much pink!
The shirt is blue and white and yellow.
    On sale from Old Navy.

  20. We started Saturday with rain, but it cleared up. The temps were great for the horse show, although the runners who came in after us.....well, they had a cold night.

It was cold most of the day yesterday, but we ventured out onto the trails and it was nice.
